Often as we sit, enjoying a cup of coffee, we run the famous 'to do' list in our minds. Discussing our day before it has even begun.
As we hear from one friend or another, how their fall planting has
overwintered, or smiling as they talk about the vegetables already growing in their gardens. We simply sigh as we gaze out our window and welcome our day with 2 inches of snow and a 'balmy'
26 degrees.
Snow in April? We must confess that we have seen snow every month of the year here. BRRRRRRRRRRR we hear you say..
.....yes, it can be, but our valley makes up for it - even if the growing season is a short 90 days! Montana has a way about itself, with 5 am sunrises and 10 pm sunsets in the summer. So many wonderful lakes so very close or just deer grazing in our very back yard. Pink tint to the snow decked mountains to end our days. The quiet woods a short walk from home, were peace is in abundance and the sky lasts forever on a sunny day. Eagles living in the tree out back and a resident owl every summer.

It is not just the land that calls to us, but the good people we have
met through the years. Hard working gentleman who still open doors for the ladies. Being able to wear a 9 mm strapped to your hip without worries of breaking laws. Where God is still spoken of with confidence and not whispered about in dark corners.
Where your best contacts are the farmers who have tilled the land for generations and the joy of livestock far more cherished then just food.
Backwards? Never! Outdoorsy? Yes, in abundance. Simple? It can be if you chose it to be. Here many seek the summer activities, as they dream of the impending snows. Hunting is the norm here, as is getting back to the basics our fathers' fathers enjoyed. Where many choose to live separated from the world gone mad with bombings & human cruelty. Where living 'off the grid' is favored over 'high society' and fine dining, though even here that can be found easily. So as we hear from this person or that about how well their garden grows when we have yet to plant ours, we can't help but think the advantage is really ours. When we think of how our land shapes us, instead of us shaping the land, we learn to enjoy even the hard times. As the cool nights surround us, we snuggle deeper into our feather quilts awaiting the amazing sunrise to greet us in ways we never dreamed. As we continue to share our lives, one with the other, regardless of the nightly news. We wait for snow to cover us in its loving blanket of white, making all seem at peace even in a world that seems to have lost its peace.
